Standing up for Suzette Jordan
A recent released video by East India Comedy (EIC) pays a befitting tribute to the brave and outspoken Suzette Jordan.
Mumbai
The video ‘EIC Outrage: An Ode to Suzette Jordan’ shows the host Sorabh Pant talking about the varying reactions when a woman comes out in the open about rape. He takes a swipe at all those who targeted her, including the Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee, who called the incident a ‘political conspiracy’. In the video Pant goes on to say that in India a victim can hope for justice only after his or her death. He adds that even that doesn’t happen till Yamaraj is the person’s lawyer. He ridiculed those who stood up against Suzette because she didn’t fit the stereotype of rape victim, adding that she decided to step out in the open to demand justice rather than staying indoors crying all day. She chose to be identified by her name rather than be known as ‘Park Street rape victim’. In 2012, Suzette was gangraped when she was leaving a bar in Park Street in Kolkata, after meeting up with a few friends. All the accused in the case were found guilty in December this year, almost six months after Suzette succumbed to meningoencephalitis.
