Your first novel is a young adult coming-of-age story and addresses teenage issues. Any particular reason you chose to address these issues in the first novel?
I like to think of my book as a slice-of-life novel. Coming-of-age implies growth, where the events in a book or film propel the main character into adulthood and maturity. In my book there is a moving on but I don’t know if things change emotionally for Kavya, the protagonist enough to feel she’s gained a sudden insight or new perspective. I actually did not mean to address any issues at all. I was only having fun. If readers happen to unearth issues, I’m very happy for them.
What inspired you to start writing?
I had quit my job and had no clue what to do next and somewhat recklessly plunged into a book-writing project, that for some reason I thought would be easy. Hence, the title of the book! Also I took to writing generally because I have absolutely no other skill.
What were your biggest hurdles while penning the novel?
Kavya, the protagonist has a distinctive voice. Every now and then it would disappear from my head and I would have to wait patiently to hear it again. This sometimes meant long gaps of several months between one chapter and the next. I had to give myself a stern talk to avoid pointless meanderings and I felt so bad about that because I thought it was all clever stuff. And, of course, trying to disregard pessimistic lectures arising from self-doubt.
