JeM leaders held, Pakistan to send team to Pathankot

The arrests of JeM leaders is seen as a desperate bid by Pakistan to ensure that the foreign secretary level talks are held as per schedule on Jan 15. 

Pakistan’s prime minister’s office said in a statement that the offices of the group were being traced and sealed, and that the government wanted to send a team of special investigators to the Pathankot air base to extend cooperation to the Indian team. 

In yet another stern message to Pakistan, US president Barack Obama, in his final State of the Union address on Wednesday, warned that Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East could become safe havens for new terrorist networks. 

“Even without IS, instability will continue in many parts of the world – Pakistan, the Middle East and Afghanistan. Some of these places may become safe havens for new terror networks,” he said. 

Meanwhile, at least seven Afghan troops were killed on Wednesday when militants launched a 4-hour gun and bomb siege near the Indian and Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad, officials said.
