5 things you need to know about the Aadhaar Bill

Rejecting all the five amendments suggested by Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha on 16 March 2016 passed the Aadhaar Bill which will aim at bettering delivery of subsidies using this unique identity number.

What is Aadhaar Bill?

The primary purpose of the Aadhaar Bill is to deliver services and subsidies to targeted people using the Unique Identification number in the Aadhaar card.

Why Aadhaar Bill?

According to Government of India, the Aadhaar Bill will be an important tool for implementing DBT schemes (Direct Benefit Target). As of now, the Aadhaar card is used for schemes such as LPG subsidy, public distribution system, Jan-Dhan Yojana, pension and provident schemes and many others. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the bill would save the government thousands of crores by barring the leakage of money going to the undeserving pockets.

Who can enroll for Aadhaar?
 
Any individual who is above five years of age can enroll for Aadhaar. In order to obtain Aadhaar card, the individual must submit their address proof such as electricity bill, driver’s license etc. In case, an individual does not have any of the above mentioned proofs, he/she can be introduced by another Aadhaar card holder.

How secure is an individual’s personal information?

Details of the individual’s information will be shared under a court order or in circumstances of national security. However, with the consent of the individuals, some personal information can be shared but not the primary biometric details, Jaitley said.

Is Aadhaar mandatory?

While every resident is entitled to obtain an Aadhaar number, it is not mandatory. For individuals who do not have Aadhaar, alternate identification will be provided. However, the Aadhaar number cannot be used as domicile or proof of citizenship.
