Reopening of bars unlikely, says Kerala minister

Ruling out re-opening of liquor bars in Kerala, Excise and Labour Minister TP Ramakrishnan said the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) will review practicability of the Abkari policy of the previous Congress-led United Democratic Front government in the state.

Talking to reporters here, Ramakrishnan, who arrived in the city for the first time after assuming office said, the excise department would take a decision after detailed discussions while considering the interest of people.

He said sale of liquor in the state has not been curtailed, and bars have not been closed totally as wine and beer sale were on in these outlets. Ramakrishnan said his government proposed to run awareness programmes to curtail liquor consumption.
