The order was issued to prevent him from offering Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at Anantnag while there was no relief for chairman of hard-line Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and another senior separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah. Immediately after the Fajr prayers, a large number of security forces and state police personnel arrived at Nigeen house of the Mirwaiz and informed him about his house arrest. He said the Mirwaiz was scheduled to address Eid-ul-Fitr congregation at Eidgah. However, he said other leaders of the amalgam remained free.

A JKLF spokesman said Malik was placed under house arrest just before the ‘Fajr’ (morning) prayers on Wednesday. JKLF has strongly condemned restriction on Malik and described it an undemocratic act and an interference in one’s religious affairs.

A spokesman for the hard-line HC Aiyaz Akbar said Geelani and Shabir Shah remained under house arrest since their return from New Delhi in May.
