Kerala today termed as 'illegal' construction of a check dam by Tamil Nadu across Nallar river, a feeder river of Bharathapuzha, and asked its counterpart to stop the work.
The preliminary work started by Tamil Nadu for the construction of a check dam across Nallar river has come to the notice of the government, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the state assembly.
Kerala has sought details of the construction work and to stop the 'illegal construction'.
However, Tamil Nadu has not responded to it, he said adding the state would make necessary intervention on the matter.
On the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) water sharing agreement with Tamil Nadu, Vijayan said there was a shortfall of 500 million cusecs in the state's share till March 15 during the current water year.
The state had already pointed out this shortage to Tamil Nadu and asked it to make available 200 cusecs water between March 16 and March 31 and later 100 cusecs till May 15, Vijayan said.
