Massive voter turnout in J-K Panchayat polls, 8th phase concludes peacefully

The voting for the eighth phase of panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir saw huge number of voters exercise their franchise at over 2,600 polling stations - 550 in the Kashmir division and 2,083 in the Jammu division.

Polling began at 8 am. The officials said 6,304 candidates are in the fray for 331 Sarpanch and 2007 Panch seats in this phase, while 43 Sarpanchs and 681 Panchs have been elected unopposed.

Over 80 percent polling was recorded in Jammu Division. Reasi district registered an all-time high 90 percent polling while 84.83% was recorded in Jammu district. 

Kathua district witnessed 84% polling followed by 83.69% in Samba district. In the border district of Rajouri, 82.54 percent electorate exercised their franchise.

The polling was over by 2 pm following which the counting of votes began.

The ninth and final phase of panchayat polls is scheduled on December 11.
