Imagine a magnificent ship at shore. It is a wonderful sight. But the ship’s magnificence lies in sailing the high seas and not in being at shore. The very purpose of its existence is achieved only when it sails into the sea.
Every human being is like the ship. Created to brave and conquer mighty oceans, to sail and never sink. But this is possible only as long as there is no damage to the ship. One cannot avoid the water around, but to successfully sail, one needs the guidance of a teacher or guru.
Your teacher is any soul who helps you perform with higher clarity and lesser effort. A true teacher has the following visionary attributes:
Focus on transformation: The teacher’s aim is not on sharing information with a student but on preparing the student for the transformation.
Wisdom, not knowledge:
Knowledge can be gained easily, but a good teacher facilitates students with his wisdom and not his knowledge. He shows them the path, but does not carry them on his shoulders.
Self is the ultimate guru: Every great leader may not be a good teacher, but every great teacher is a true leader because he creates other leaders, ones who lead themselves. A true teacher is one who makes students realise that the greatest teacher or guru is within oneself.
This guru alone is one’s ultimate guide and helps you be your own leader.
A teacher need not be in human form only. For a genuine student will find teaching in everything in nature. From the dog that has a powerful sense of smell but still never steals from its master’s house. From the cat that covers its waste.
And the sea that is constantly in motion still never crosses its shores. But to realize the teacher in everything else, we need a teacher in human form.
One might have all the skill, expertise and knowledge but to see in the dark what one needs is vison and an external light.
A guru is the light that dispels darkness and makes one realise that the real guru is within oneself.
This guru within is the only source to rid oneself of ignorance that darkens knowledge and happiness.
I salute every teacher who makes it possible to live a life of peace, progress and prosperity.
