Mind plays a role in good health

The first thought that comes to mind when one thinks about healthcare today, is preventive measures to safeguard the body from external factors like pollution, virus etc. In short, prevention from infectious or communicable diseases.

However, facts point to a fundamental error in our understanding of our own health and wellbeing. It is alarming that four out of five people die because of non-communicable diseases. Meaning, no external person or factor was responsible for their ill health. These non-communicable diseases include lifestyle diseases like diabetes, high/low BP, cancer etc.

The only cause for these diseases can be attributed to unawareness of the self and indiscipline in lifestyle. Right food and exercise alone aren’t enough to prevent and cure non-communicable diseases; the psychology of a person contributes hugely too. For example, constant stress and unhappiness create conditions in the physical body for the advent of high BP and diabetes.

Prevention and cure of non-communicable diseases can only be dealt with holistically, and holistic health is incomplete without considering ‘mental health’ or the ‘state of mind’.

The most common reason for non-communicable diseases aren’t external factors, but one’s internal condition or the damage one inflicts on oneself through emotional harassment and addiction. Emotional harassment is the low self-esteem or low value one has for themselves based on past experience. Nine out of ten people suffer from low self-esteem because they have desires but also the belief that they cannot fulfil those desires. This makes them feel unworthy. The holistic solution is meditation for the mind, body and soul.

For the mind: On the mental level, meditation develops the feeling of self-esteem and security which help a person get back into emotional balance and immediately lowers stress. Once the mind is free of stress, phenomenal changes occur in physical health. It safeguards one from communicable diseases and eradicates the possibility of non-communicable diseases.

For the body: The benefits of meditation on the physical body are multifold. Meditation immediately lowers blood pressure, improves and quickens healing and strengthens the immune and nervous systems. These benefits are possible because of two powerful outcomes of meditation; increase in energy levels and better sleep.

For the soul: On the spiritual side, meditation makes you realise that ‘You are not the doer’. What is to happen will happen, no matter how much one resists it; and what is not to happen, will not, irrespective of the effort one takes. This realisation frees one from guilt, worries and fear.

Meditating isn’t for God. It is for you to make use of the God within. And by doing so, be the source of success and happiness for yourself and the entire world.

Wishing you a life full of health, peace and happiness.
