University vice-chancellor Prof AM Moorthy said that based on Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s vision to make sportspersons from the state bag international honours in various sports, the university launched the comprehensive one-year post graduate diploma course in the regular mode. The university also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Federation recently for the course and technical support.

“The federation will provide technical support, boats for training and the university will offer infrastructure and teach the course to the students,” Dr R Subramanian, Professor of Department of Advanced Training and Coaching at the University said. The university has also launched a post graduate diploma in adventure sports in the distance education format this academic year. “This course will cover sports like parasailing and rock-climbing. This will help a graduate to coach people in these areas,” Prof Moorthy said.

The vice-chancellor said that the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) team would visit the university this month as it had applied for UGC’s 12(B) status,  which would help the institution get funds from the Commission. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team will also inspect the university before awarding accreditation.

The Association of Indian University (AIU) has granted permanent membership to the university this year, University registrar Dr T Radha Krishnan said.

Pointing out that the university has decided to allow schools to use the its playground for free, Prof Moorthy said that this would help them create awareness about various courses available in the university and attract them to study in the institution.
