Celebrating National Sports Day
National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29 every year. This day marks the birthday of hockey player Dhyan Chand, who won Olympic gold medals for India in the years 1928,1932 and 1936. Here are a few facts associated with the observance.

This day is celebrated by organising friendly matches between different Indian hockey teams at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, which was constructed in the respect and honour of Dhyan Chand.
On National Sports Day, the President gives out all the sports-related awards like the Arjuna, Dronacharya and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna to honour sportspersons and coaches who have made the nation proud with their service in their respective sports.
Dhyan Chand Award is India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games, given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The award was initiated in 2002.
The day is also celebrated as the Annual Sports Day in many schools across the country. Several activities across the country are organised to create awareness on the advancement of sports in the country and to motivate youngsters to make a successful career in different sports.
