Speaking to DTNext at the ACA-VDCA Stadium here on Wednesday, the chairman of selectors said: “Rahul wasn’t omitted from the team because of lack of form. It was because of an injury. He has recovered well and has proved himself in a domestic game, in line with our policies, and we welcome him back into the squad. Gambhir is still a part of the team and it is up to the captain and coach to decide the best XI for any game.”

The Andhra-born player said he was happy to see Visakhapatnam host a Test match. “Over the last one year, cricket has been at its peak here. We organised six IPL games, one T20 (against Sri Lanka), one ODI (against New Zealand) and now the Test match. It is a historic moment and we will strive to make this a grand success,” Prasad added.

Prasad said it is good for younger players to understand and realise the importance of proving themselves in the longest format. “It is only in Test cricket where the true potential of a player can be seen. Younger players are realising it and it is good for them and for the game too. It brings out the character of a player,” Prasad said.

The chairman of selectors said some members from the selection committee would be travelling with the Indian team on every tour keeping the next World Cup in mind. “Two selectors will be with the team on foreign tours and one selector will accompany the team for matches within the country,” Prasad added.
