Hameed injury, a guarded secret

Everyone in Mohali knew Haseeb Hameed was injured as he did not take the field when India batted second. But the Indian team did not know how serious it was until it was disclosed after the match because the England teenager batted with customary ease when he came back in the middle-order and delayed the Indian victory with a halfcentury.

“It’s terrible luck on the young kid. It’s devastating for him. He’ll come back again. To change his grip so he doesn’t use that part of his hand shows how good he is,” said captain Cook. “I wouldn’t have changed anything. It was handled absolutely fine. It’s a broken hand - we knew pretty much straightaway. We weren’t going to tell India it was a broken hand. We knew it was sore; he knew it was sore. He wanted to bat - he’s desperate. You can’t hold guys like that back,” Cook added. Hameed will miss the last two Tests. Coach Bayliss sounded extremely pleased about Haseeb Hameed: “He keeps amazing everyone who’s working with him. It was a fantastic effort. It’s another plus in his corner. Not only can he play but he’s tough little character too. It was a gutsy effort,” he said.
