India seemed to lose the plot and at one point, Virat Kohli even appeared to have lost track of the stumps when his throw, wide off the target, almost hit Liam Dawson on the head.
Kohli was rushing to save a single in the leg slip area, running from first slip, that Adil Rashid had hit off Amit Mishra. The call was quick and Dawson responded to Rashid’s call in a flash and reached the striker’s end easily. Kohli threw the ball and surprisingly it wasn’t in the direction of the stumps at the striker’s or at the bowler’s end. The ball just flew past Dawson’s head, and had he not ducked, he would have had to bear the brunt of the blow of the throw on his head.
Dawson stared at Kohli for a few seconds and the Indian captain put his hand up in apology straightaway. However, the on-field umpire Marias Erasmus had a chat with him about the incident too.
On the first day, Kohli’s wayward throw gave the opposition five penalty runs as the ball found the helmet behind the wicket-keeper.
