SPOT-FIXING
The biggest scandal broke out in 2013 that changed the face of Indian cricket forever. Three Rajasthan Royals players S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandela and Ankeet Chavan were arrested for the crime and handed bans. The arrest of Vindoo Dara Singh led the cat out of the bag on the involvement of Raj Kundra and Gurunath Meiyappan, who were team owners, in betting. The BCCI president N Srinivasan had to step down and in 2015 both Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were suspended from the league for two years.
OUSTER OF LALIT MODI
The league was Lalit Modi’s brain-child but the former strongman was shown the door in an unceremonious manner after the end of the third edition of the league in 2010. The BCCI had sent out an official mail about Lalit Modi’s sacking after he had just finished reading out the closing speech of the 2010 IPL on the night of the final. Modi was accused of financial impropriety, rigging bidding deals, offering bribes, betting and money laundering and even attempted to conduct rebel leagues in England without informing the Indian and England cricket boards.
SHAHRUKH KHAN BANNED FROM WANKHEDE
The King of Bollywood was banned from entering the iconic Wankhede Stadium after allegedly misbehaving with ground officials. A five-year ban was slapped on SRK in 2013 after he was caught launching abuses at the MCA officials. The ban was later revoked after a couple of years.
CROSSING THE LIMITS
Australian player Luke Pomersbach was arrested by the Delhi Police during the 2012 edition of the league for allegedly molesting a woman. The American Indian woman alleged that Pomersbach stormed into her room without her consent and even beat her fiancee, who tried to stop the 27-year-old. However, the case was settled by both parties outside the court and the charges against Pomersbach were subsequently dropped. In the next edition, Pune Warriors teammates Rahul Sharma and Wayne Parnell — along with 42 others — were caught by the Mumbai Police for consumption of recreational drugs during a rave party at a plush hotel in Juhu in 2012. Both Parnell and Rahul claimed to have not taken any drugs, but positive blood samples shattered those claims by the cricketers.
PLAYER BRAWLS
While players getting into altercations are not new to the game, some scuffles went over the roof and garnered a lot of attention. Some of them are:
SLAP GATE
During a match in the first edition of the league, India teammates S Sreesanth and Harbhajan Singh were involved in an altercation and the off-spinner slapped the fast bowler in full public glare. Later, Harbhajan went to Sreesanth’s dressing room and it was reported that he went inside to apologise to the pacer and had a long chat with him.
GAMBHIR vs KOHLI
During a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders, Virat Kohli holed out in the deep and was immediately seen rushing towards Gautam Gambhir at point. The two had a heated argument and more damage was prevented after Gambhir’s teammate Rajat Bhatia and the umpires intervened.
POLLARD-STARC FACE-OFF
It all started with Mitchell Starc bowled a bouncer to Kieron Pollard and the batsman missed connecting clean. Starc followed it up with some words. The next ball, the West Indian pulled out when Starc was on the verge of delivering the ball, however the bowler released the ball, following which an enraged Pollard flung his bat on the turf.
