Only 33 overs were played on day three, during which the South Africans advanced from 219 for 3 to 294 for 7. The pace of Ankit Rajpoot broke the overnight stand of Rassie van der Dussen and Rudi Second in the 10th over of the day, when it was worth a valuable 70 runs.

Van der Dussen had added just four runs to his overnight 18 when he was caught behind, while Second struggled on from 35 to 47 when he became Rajpoot’s second victim four overs later.

No one was able to get going as the Indian attack chipped away until the rain came. Senuran Muthusamy was still at the crease on 23, having seen Dwaine Pretorius (10) and Dane Piedt (22) come and go. The Indians will settle for a draw after winning the first unofficial Test by an innings on the back of a 10-wicket haul from Mohammed Siraj, who has picked up just 2-58 this time round.

India's sharp work in the field continued when Mohammed Siraj dived forward at cover, off Jayant Yadav's off-spin, to send Dwaine Pretorius back for a 23-ball 10, but a forty-run partnership for the seventh-wicket helped South Africa briefly recover.

Dane Piedt - the stand-in captain in place of Khaya Zondo - walked in when the sixth wicket fell to join Senuran Muthusamy, and handed India an opportunity off his very first ball. But Mayank Agarwal dropped the tough chance at cover to hand Piedt a brief reprieve.

Piedt then took on the spinners, crunching a six over deep midwicket and three more leg-side boundaries off Jayant and Yuzvendra Chahal, but his leg-stump was soon sent cartwheeling by a Siraj snorter in the 93rd over. With less than two minutes for tea, the umpires called for a break right away with South Africa 294 for 7.

Brief scores: India A 345 (Hanuma Vihari 148, Ankit Bawne 80) vs South Africa A 294 for 7 (Hamza 93, Erwee 58, Second 47, Rajpoot 2/42, Siraj 2/58)
