“The stone weighed 1.1 kilogram,” the urologist of Senthil Multi Speciality Hospital, Erode, S. Gowrishankar who performed the surgery told DT Next on Wednesday. The doctor claimed that this is one of the largest kidney stones to be surgically removed. According to the doctor, the farmer knew that he had a stone in the kidney about 10 years ago. It kept growing in size over the years. He could not get it surgically removed as he was having multiple complications – such as infection in the bladder and kidney ailments. “He tolerated the unbearable pain and went for various alternative medications before he came here two days ago,” he said. A scan and x-ray showed that he had a mammoth stone in the bladder. His heath was checked and he was certified fit for undergoing surgery. The stone was removed immediately.
“A stone that is one cm long can give enough pain and drive a patient to hospital, we are surprised at how he had tolerated it for years and continued farming and other activities,” Dr. Gowrishankar said. Kuppusamy is recovering and was shifted to the ward on Wednesday. He will be under observation for a day and is likely to be discharged on Friday.
