Puducherry, TN to receive more rains

A low pressure area near South Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression in the next 24 to 48 hours and bring rains during this period over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Met office said here today.

“A low pressure area has formed near South Andaman and Nicobar Islands and North of Sumatra Islands in the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify into a depression in next 24 hours and a deep depression in the subsequent 24 hours,” Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, S Balachandran told reporters.

Balachandran said that in the next 24 to 48 hours rainfall may occur in some places over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, while Chennai might experience intermittent rainfall in one or two places during this period. In the last 24 hours ending 0830 hours, Sivagiri district in Tamil Nadu received the maximum rainfall of 6 cm while Meenambakkam in Chennai received 3 cm, Balachandran said. 

Earlier, cyclonic storm Nada, which was expected to bring heavy rains in the state, had weakened into a depression and hit landfall near Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu on December 2. It had weakened into a well marked low pressure area, moved west north westwards and had brought rains to various parts of the state, heavy in some areas and moderate to light in others.
