Special teams from Tiruchy in Chennai

Special teams from the Highways department and Tiruchy Corporation have been rushed to cyclone- hit Chennai to help clear the huge amount of green debris. The two teams comprising close to 220 persons including 120 sanitary staff from the Corporation, along with their senior officials will camp in Chennai for three days.

According to Karthikeyan, the Corporation sanitary inspector who heads the team, the civic staff along with three tipper lorries and 10 tree cutting machines started for Chennai on Monday late hours. “After clearing the Sholinganallur-ECR on Tuesday morning, we will move to Kodambakkam (Zone 10), ” Karthikeyan said. 

Meanwhile, as per the instructions of Chief Engineer of Highways Department in their headquarters, a team of 38 Highways Department personnel and workers including 30 road workers, four road inspectors, and other senior staffs such as Assistant Divisional Engineer, Divisional Engineer from Tiruchy region presided by Superintending Engineer S Periyasamy rushed to Chennai on Monday evening. 

“We are carrying nine power saws and a tipper lorry with us to rectify the damaged roads, and particularly to remove the uprooted trees at the earliest,” a senior official with Highways Department said. Special teams from Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode Corporations will be in Chennai to aid the ongoing rescue works.

Sanitary workers from Kovai for clean-up ops 
To help speed up the cleaning process in Chennai city after Cyclone Vardah made a landfall on Monday, a team of 150 conservancy workers from Coimbatore Corporation left here on Monday night. Accompanying them are 10 supervisors and two sanitary inspectors to supervise and guide them. 
Equipped with the requisite gear for cleaning purposes and electric saws to cut and remove trees that got uprooted the team, the team is expected to be in Chennai for three days and work alongside the local sanitary workers. Corporation officials said that they would be sending more workers for the job if needed.
The team left in three Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses hired by the Corporation and was flagged off by Corporation Commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan. It is worth mentioning that last year, after the December deluge, teams of sanitary workers were sent to Chennai to help the city limp back to normal after the disastrous floods.
