The victim was identified as A Venkata Alwar (29) of Vaidhyalingam Road in Old Pallavaram in Chennai. According to the police, preliminary inquiry revealed that he was employed in Ethiopia in a higher education institution and his contract ended this month. “About a week ago he called his family in Chennai and told them that he would be coming in a couple of days and asked them to arrange for his marriage,” inspector V Selvaraj said. Though he reached India, he came straight to Coimbatore without going to his house in Chennai. On Saturday he hired a room in the lodge on the Geetha Hall Road near the railway station. On Monday when the lodge staff knocked on his room, it was not answered. Police broke open the door and found him dead in the toilet. His passport was in pieces in the closet and a glass in which he mixed poison with soft drinks too was found. A suicide note was found in his diary. His parents received his body on Tuesday.
