Note ban claims one more life in Ramanathapuram
A 54-year-old man died while standing in a queue to deposit demonetised currencies at a nationalised bank at Keelakarai in Ramanathapuram district, on December 21.

The deceased, identified as Siddiq Ali from Chinna Ervadi near Keelakarai, had gone to Indian Overseas Bank, Keelakarai branch, in the morning at around 6.30 am to wait in the queue to deposit the old currency notes.
Sources said that after the recent announcement of RBI regarding the restriction in depositing cash, there was heavy rush in the banks. It is said Siddiq had visited the bank on December 20 to deposit the cash he could not deposit owing to the crowd.
Hence, he arrived at the bank early and stood in the queue. At around 11 am, when he was still standing in the queue he had fainted.
Immediately, people standing in the queue informed the ambulance service and tried to get water for Siddiq, but in vain. Soon, Siddiq was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared brought dead. Immediately, people standing in the bank protested and claimed that there were no basic amenities in the bank. Keelakarasi DSP Maheshwari reached the spot and held talks with the protesters assuring of appropriate action, after which the protest was withdrawn.
Women sing Oppari for ‘dead’
ATM Meanwhile, members of CPM staged a novel protest in front of an ATM centre in Madurai which remained closed for more than 40 days. The women cadre placed floral wreath at the entrance of the ATM centre and sang Oppari to symbolise the non-functioning of ATM centre.
