Two cops held for illegal note swap

Four persons including two policemen and one home guard personnel were arrested for cheating a contractor of Rs three lakh for exchange of old currencies on December 21.

It is said, a gang of four persons identified as R Babu (31), of Kavalkaranpatti working as a police constable with Manapparai police station and his friend A Jayaprakash (30) working as constable in Ramji Nagar police station, S Anand (24) of Kallikudi near Manapparai, a Home Guard personnel and C Pushparaj (25) had planned to profit from exchange of old currencies. 

As per their plan, on Monday, the gang approached John Arputharaj (26), a contractor with TNPL in Karur, who is also dealing with the exchange of new currencies with scrapped notes for commission. The gang reportedly told Arputharaj that they were hadold currencies worth Rs 3 lakh for which they needed new currency with Rs 2000 denomination. It is said, Aprutharaj demanded 35 per cent commission. 

Arputharaj came with the money but the gang who were also in the uniform took the sum and chased him away. Later, they shared the money with themselves. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the gang again contacted Arputharaj and demanded Rs one lakh more. 

The shocked Arputharaj lodged a complaint with the IG (Central Zone) Varadarajulu who directed the Ramji Nagar police to investigate. Subsequently, the police investigation proved that the complaint was genuine, the police called the gang to Kulithalai through Arputharaj on Tuesday night and arrested all the four and the money was also recovered from them.
