Dr Abba Ruba Sunanthini, a native of Tirunelveli, had worked extensively during the time of Chennai flood and had setup a clinic at Thuraipakkam to serve the people who were affected in the flood. She along with her friends had worked for the people and had collected just Rs 10 from the people for consultations.
Most of the patients could not even pay the fees, yet they continued the service for one year till this November. Her work was appreciated by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, and hence after her death she had decided to return to Tirunelveli and start a clinic in the name of Amma.
Speaking to DTNext, Ruba claimed that she had worked as government doctor and as she was part of Doctors Wing of AIADMK she had served the people affected during flood in the evenings. She had treated many people suffering from diabetes and infections in which she had specialised. Following the death of Jayalalithaa she had decided to return to Tirunelveli and to serve the people of her native. She decided to start a Amma Clinic, in memory of Jayalalithaa, and had fixed Rs 10 as the fee per patient.
Apart from that she had planned to bring specialists from Chennai every week to address specific problems of the people without any extra charge she claimed. Ruba had resigned her government job after she was given a seat in the civic poll at ward 44 of Tirunelveli Corporation and she was also the Mayor candidate but the election was cancelled. She had decided to inaugurate the clinic in the same ward in Tirunelveli.
