The incident happened on November 12 when the boy Varnesh, from Velliampatti near Alanganallur began vomiting intensely in school at 11 am. His sister Subashri took him home. His mother Valarmathy, was shocked to see that the vomit had burnt his hands. She rushed him to the Madurai GRH.

Doctors initially were not aware of the problem and he was administered antibiotics. But two days later, the District administration carried out investigations and confirmed that the boy had accidentally drunk acid in his house.

Then the treatment was changed and the next day he vomited blood. Dean of Madurai  GRH, Vairamuthuraja, claimed that the boy went into shock and his condition worsened. There was only 20 percentage chance for his survival but treatment continued.

It was then a tracheostomy was performed to ease his breathing. After 10 days he was shifted to the anaesthesia ward owing to lung collapse. He was continuously monitored for 40 days till he recovered.

Later, new blood was infused and this improved his blood circulation. The boy has now completely recovered and his diet pattern has been changed. “He should be given only mashed food and should be off spices for some more time, claimed  the Dean.

Mathiarasan, Head, Paediatrics Department of GRH, claimed that parents must be careful in storing acid. It is usually  stored in soft drinks bottle. Acid containers should be kept out of the reach of children, he advised.
