‘Captain’ at your service in Nilgiri Express

The Train Captain Service (TCS) was launched in the Mettupalayam-Chennai Central ‘Nilgiri Express’ (Train No 12671/12672) by the Salem Division of Southern Railway. The TCS will be a single point of contact to guide, assist and redress grievances of passengers on board hereafter.

The captain will be the overall in-charge of the train from end to end, responsible for ensuring the amenities for passengers such as availability of water, cleanliness of coaches and toilets and working of electrical fittings such as fan, light and mobile charging points.

He should initiate necessary action to redress the problems immediately or take it up with higher officials if it could not be done. TCS is in line with the Railway Ministry’s announcement to launch the service in at least one train in all the divisions. A senior railway official said that the Ticket Examiner will be appointed as the TCS.

Three ticket examiners have been nominated as the captains of the train — R Rathish, S Dinesh Kumar and A Sandeep. They will take turns to travel with passengers. Their names as well as mobile numbers will be displayed on the reservation chart.

The seat where he will be seated will also be displayed on the chart for passengers to meet them in person to raise their concerns. “We are planning to send mobile numbers of the TCS concerned to the passengers through SMS. Till then passengers can also contact Railway Helpline 138 to know about the captain of the day,” the official added.
