Farmers submit a petition to Kovilpatti RDO

Madurai

A group of farmers led by Varadharajan, vice president, MDMK Farmers Wing, submitted a petition to Kovilpatti RDO, with towel over their head symbolising that everything had been lost and they had become paupers.

In the petition they claimed that district administration had announced that the last date for paying premium is January 22 but the private insurance companies and cooperative banks are refusing to obtain insurance premium amount for the last four days. If they refuse to obtain the premium amount they will not get the crop insurance amount.

Hence district administration should ensure that premium amount is obtained and they would get their crop insurance on right time. Varadharajan claimed that already the rain-fed crops were given a drought relief of Rs 3,000 per acre and the amount was meagre.

Farmers were hoping that they can save themselves by the insurance amount. If that was denied it would be a disaster for them, he claimed. Kovilpatti RDO Kannabiran obtained the petition and promised action.
