Special Sub Inspector’s alleged attack on mentally-ill man goes viral

A video of a mentally challenged person being brutally assaulted by a Special Sub Inspector (SSI) of Special Branch at Manalmedu Bazaar near Mayiladuthurai has gone viral in the social media.

The district police department has stated that the victim was not a mentally challenged person, but creating nuisance in the public place during the incident. The victim was identified as R Sakthivel based from Punjamedu of Cuddalore district had reportedly reached Manalmedu years back with his father Ranganathan who was a fish vendor. 

After Ranganathan died, Sakthivel was said to be affected by mental illness and has been living at Manalmedu Bus Stand along with his mother Anjammal. He is in the habit of wandering on the streets of Manalmedu and recently he was found standing half-dressed at Manalmedu Bazaar in an inebriated condition. He was also reportedly uttering abusive words towards the public. 

On seeing him being disruptive to the public, Annadurai, SSI, Special Branch attached with Manalmedu Police Station has initially warned him to move away from the spot. However, it is said to be that Sakthivel refused to move. Subsequently, the policeman lathi-charged the victim following which Sakthivel collapsed on the ground.

However, he was continually hit for another few seconds. The incident was video-recorded by the bystanders and circulated in the social media platforms which created public anger over the conduct of the victim by the policeman.

Not a mentally-ill man, says Superintendent of Police 
Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police M Durai denied that the victim was mentally challenged and informed that he is an accused in a murder case. “The victim is mentally stable and he is an accused in a murder case that took place on 2015. He has been creating public nuisance and very often he abuses the public with obscene words and I have ordered for a departmental inquiry and the policeman will be punished based on the gravity of his act.” the Superintendent of Police said.
