Conveying this to reporters here on Saturday, CPM’s Tamil Nadu unit secretary G Ramakrishnan quoted a few media reports which said that the Public Works Department (in Kerala) in a report to the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has claimed that no construction was underway across the river.

“We are waiting for the Chief Minister of Kerala to study the report and issue a statement. We will also get the report from our fact-finding team. In case, if we come to know that a check dam is under construction or there are attempts to build a structure across the river, then we will stand by the side of Tamil Nadu people and fight for their rights,” he said.

Ramakrishnan added that they would not take the issue lightly just because their party was in power in that State.

Jallikattu protests

Appreciating the students’ movement for jallikattu rights, he reiterated the need for a permanent solution to the problem surrounding the traditional support.

He added it would be good if they showed the same unity for other common cause and pressing issues, such as the livelihood of farmers.
