High tension cable-hit Jallikattu protester dies

After battling for nearly 20 days, R Yogeshwaran, a 17-year-old carpenter of Mannarpalayam, who suffered injuries after he came in contact with a high tension cable during a pro-jallikattu protest atop a train in Salem, died at the Salem Government Super Specialty Hospital on February 7 morning.

On Jan 19, thousands of students and youth protesting in Salem detained the Bengaluru-Karaikudi passenger as part of the protest. A few of them, including Yogesh, climbed up the train and were heading from one end of the train to the other when he accidentally hit an overhead HT cable and suffered 80 pc burns. 

The carpenter, who was thrown off the train, was rushed to a hospital where he was battling for nearly 20 days and died on Feb 7. Dean of the hospital P Kanagaraj said that the boy died of Septicemia, without responding to intensive treatment. Actor Raghava Lawrence visited victim’s parents and also urged the government to give compensation. He also spoke to Yogesh’s sister, Priyadharshini and stated he will take the expenses of her studies.
