Uneasy calm prevails across delta districts
Uneasy calm prevailed in the entire delta districts after the Supreme Court verdict convicted AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala in the DA case on Tuesday. However, public heaved a sigh of relief as routine life was not affected anywhere, even in Mannargudi the home town of Sasikala. Though traders initially planned to down shutters, they did not go ahead as there was no sign of violence.

Police security was tightened across the districts and buses continued to ply as usual. Police patrol vehicles zoomed across the city frequently to monitor the situation.
Though a section of AIADMK cadre who support Chief Minister O Panneerselvam came to celebrate the verdict against Sasikala, party seniors cautioned them as the late chief minister J Jayalalilthaa too was in the accused list.
After the verdict, the AIADMK’s urban district unit officer remained closed on Tuesday. While most of the district level office-bearers refused to pick phone calls, a few numbers were out of reach and the public from Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts informed that there was unusual calm prevailed in the sensitive districts.
However, the members of Deepa Peravai and a few of their supporters celebrated the verdict against VK Sasikala and garlanded the statue of the party founder MGR, burst crackers and distributed sweets across the delta district on Tuesday.
In Tiruchy, members led by Deepa Peravai organiser Sainathan burst crackers near the MGR statue round about near court. They raised slogans in support of the verdict and expressed happiness for the conviction of Sasikala. Similar celebrations were held in Srirangam, Somarasampettai, Manapparai and Tennur. In a few places, the DMK cadre too joined the Deepa Peravai members.
Auto drivers joined the celebrations in Thanjavur, led by a MGR loyalist Neelamani at the railway junction.
In Peravurani, the Deepa Peravai cadre led by Durai Manavalan, the town president, burst crackers in front of Anna statue. In Kumbakonam a group of persons burst crackers in front of the Uchchipillayarkoil. Similar were the scenes in Aduthurai, Swamimalai and Pudukottai.
However, there was mild tension in Perambalur when a group of AIADMK members attempted to assault Deepa Peravai members, who were rejoicing the SC verdict. But police intervened on time and diffused it.
