Abbas (37), a native of Sivaganga, was staying with his wife Faridah (30) near the Manapparai Railway station. He and his wife used to draw pictures on the road and lived off of the money given by the public for their works.
Late on Friday, Faridah developed labour pain and Abbas took her to the Manapparai GH. As her condition was said to be critical, doctors at the GH advised him to rush her to Tiruchy GH.
Abbas said that he was asked to pay for transporting his wife to the hospital by the ambulance staff. “Since, I don’t have the money, I decided to take her back to the place where we used to stay near the railway station,” he added.
Even before Abbas began his return journey, Faridah’s labour intensified and she suddenly felt that the baby was coming out. Abbas helped his wife deliver on the roadside itself.
Passers-by, who noticed Faridah’s condition, called the 108 service. Soon an ambulance reached the spot and the nursing staff helped both the baby and the mother.
The duo was administered first aid and was rushed back to the Manapparai GH.
The condition of the mother and the baby boy is said to be stable.
