‘Remove karuvelam trees along Cauvery’
In order to prevent the ground water level going beyond reach in the region, an environmental organisation has sought the district Collector to remove the seemai karuvelam (seema karuvelam) trees in and around the Cauvery river, as these trees are seen in vast numbers along the river bed.

Thanneer Organisation, a pro-environmental unit which has been fighting to save the water bodies in Tiruchy district, on Monday submitted a petition with the Collector stating karuvelam trees have grown in large numbers across a stretch from Mukkombu to Jeeyapuram along the Cauvery river bed. The organisation also even a few private parties of maintaining these trees for business purpose.
“When the district administration has been removing these trees on plain lands, it is high time to shift the focus on Cauvery – the main water source for the entire delta region. Unless the water sources are protected from these trees, the depleting ground water level in these region would develop into a big problem in the future,” they said. They demanded to remove the trees at the earliest to save the region from the drought condition.
