Lankan Navy arrests 12 Tamil Nadu fishermen

Twelve fishermen from Pudukottai district were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing in the mid-sea, on March 26.

The incident happened in on Sunday night when 12 fishermen from Jagadhapattinam in Pudukottai district were fishing near Delft island in two boats. The Lankan Navy intercepted and arrested them. They were taken to Kankesandurai Port and were handed over to Assistant Director of Fisheries Department of Jaffna. Later, they were produced in court and were remanded till April 4. Meanwhile Rameswaram fishermen who were fishing near Katchatheevu were attacked by Sri Lankan Navy. At around 8 pm on Saturday, Lankan Navy personnel threw stones and glass bottles at the fishermen. The Navy personnel had also allegedly cut the fishermen’s nets.

EPS writes to PM to take up issue with Lankan govt 

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up the issue at the highest diplomatic level and make necessary arrangements to secure the release of the fishermen and their boats, a release said. “I urge you to take this up with the highest authorities of Sri Lankan government,” Palanisamy said.
