“We will wait for a few more days for the government to act and move the court,” president of Salem Bar Association G Ponnusamy told DTNext. He said this after heading a protest by members of the association at the Salem Combined Court Building, on Tuesday, to support the farmers protesting in Delhi for 15 days.
He said that the state federation is also discussing the issue and is planning to move the High Court as the government has failed to protect farmers.
“It is sad to see farmers dying in the state due to the severe drought. But the government at the Centre has turned a blind eye to the plight of farmers who have lost their investment and all that they had due to the drought. So far, the Union government has not taken them seriously as they are crying for relief for two weeks at the nation’s capital,” he said.
Ponnusamy said, “Advocates are not just demanding compensation for them as we want them (Centre) to keep up their promise of linking rivers, which found an important place in the BJP’s election manifesto in 2014, which is the best solution to protect farmers even at times of drought.”
After the protest the advocates resumed work, as a court boycott would badly affect the public as it is a holiday for courts from Wednesday to Friday.
