Addressing the media at the Corporation office on Friday evening, Madurai Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri said, “It is for the first time that the ‘Happy Street’ initiative is being implemented in Madurai. Chennai and Coimbatore Corporations have already initiated it. Events will be organised on all the first Sundays of every month from April onwards. Traffic will be blocked for three hours on these streets.

He added that as part of the first ‘Happy Street’, also known as ‘Car Free Sunday’, to be held at Anna Nagar Main Road for three hours from 6 am to 9 am on April 2, various activities like dance, yoga, aerobics and games for kids will be organised for the residents of the street.

“Every month, the ‘Happy Street’ initiative would be held around a special theme and the events to be conducted this Sunday at Anna Nagar Main Road are centred around the theme of ‘Solid Waste Management and Plastic Ban’ in order to create awareness among the people regarding these burning issues. Corporation officials would also set up awareness stalls in the area and the first polio awareness campaign would also be organised,” said Nanduri.

He further claimed that Corporation officials have publicised the initiative through social media and a video had also been released earlier. The residents of the city have also devised a tagline for the initiative and have named it ‘Vandiye Varaadhu Vandhu Vilayadu’ (No Vehicles Would Come, Come and Play).
