Gang attacks police to rescue culprit, SI injured

In a daring incident, a gang of criminals assaulted police officials to rescue a man who was arrested for creating public nuisance after consuming liquor. The gang entered the police station and attacked all those present there indiscriminately.

The Sub inspector who was present sustained injuries. Two persons were arrested and a case was registered against seven others in Palakkarai here on Monday. 

It is said, Radhakrishnan (26), a financier from Edatheru in Palakkarai, was reportedly consuming liquor standing in the middle of the road on late night on Sunday. When the Palakkarai police who were on patrol duty took Radhakrishnan to the station and conducted inquiries. Meanwhile, on hearing about Radhakrishnan’s detention, a group of 20 men including relatives of Radhakrishnan’s from Edatheru, went to the police station and besieged it. They demanded the immediate release of Radhakrishnan. It is said, Inspector Rajendran and SI Thangamani who were in the station refused to release Radhakrishnan.

This led to a a verbal quarrel first and later resulted in an assault on the police. At one point of time, the group began overpowering the police in which SI Thangamani sustained severe injuries while inspector Rajendran’s dress was torn. He too sustained a mild injury before the other police men attempted to rescue them. Soon, police personnel from Ponmalai rushed to the spot and arrested Radhakrishnan and his relative Parthiban (27) for assaulting the police officials. Police have registered a case against seven persons.
