Based on a tip-off, the sleuths headed by Superintendent Jothimani spotted a fibre boat fitted with motor. On seeing the officials, the fishermen in the boat tried to escape by speeding away. The officials gave a chase and shot one of the fishermen in his arm. However, they dropped a large water can into the sea and sped away.
Though the officials lost track of the fishermen, they secured the water can. They found 40 gold bars weighing 100 grams each in a package inside the abandoned water can. They seized the gold bars and brought it to Rameswaram.
Custom officials told the media that the value of the seized gold is about Rs 1.15 crore.
