The deceased fisherman identified as Edward Francis, from Sudukadampatti coastal village near Rameswaram, had gone to sea to collect crabs from his nets, on May 21. He did not return for long and his family lodged a complaint with the police. When the Marine police and Coast Guard personnel searched for Edward, he could not be located. Neither Edward nor his boat could be traced by the officials. Only his lungi and fishing nets were found.

Therefore, it was suspected that he would have died. In the meantime, country boat fishermen from the area observed a strike demanding the security forces to organise a thorough search operation. Before they could take any steps, his body washed ashore near Kottaipattinam coast on Sunday. Immediately the Marine police and Coast Guard personnel were informed. They in turn informed the family of Edward Francis. The body was taken to Sudukadampatti coastal village.
