Entire opposition in Tamil Nadu up in arms against notification
A protest, by those opposing the Centre’s move to notify new rules to regulate livestock markets under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (PCA), took place near the City Collectorate, on Monday evening. It was convened by the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam and had united the opposition.

The protest assumes significance since the entire cabinet and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami are under the scanner for keeping quiet over the notification which would affect the farmers and merchants involved in beef trade, and leather imports.
The opposition had been blaming the state government for taking a soft-line with the centre on several issues, and the cabinet makes it conspicuous by evading such questions before the media. The protest coincided with the brief spell of rains in the city.
MMK MLA MH Jawahirullah, DMK Rajyasabha MP TKS Elangovan, CPI (M) Rajyasabha MP TK Rangarjan, former TNCC chief KVK Thangkabalu, representatives from CPI, and VCK were among those present in the dais.
“We have to vehemently oppose this move as it is detrimental to our pluralism. The ruling BJP at the Centre had taken the anti-people stand. This notification of restricting the sale of cattle for slaughter should be withdrawn,” Jawahirullah said.
“States ruled by Congress, and left parties had already announced that they would not implement it citing that it’s the subject figuring in state list. Tamil Nadu should also take a similar stand,” demanded KVK Thangkabalu. The other leaders who spoke at the occasion echoed their views.
