Funds released for alternative crops in delta
The state government has cleared a series of measures to raise alternative crops in the Cauvery delta comprising Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts fully and part of Tiruchy, Pudukkottai and Cuddalore districts at an estimated Rs 56.92 crore, an official release stated.

Under this, the delta will be provided 12 hours uninterrupted power supply, using available ground water to raise paddy in 1.60 lakh acres and alternative crops in another 1.32 lakh acres.
The programme will be dovetailed with existing central government schemes, the release said and added that while Rs 24.73 crore would be used from National Agriculture Development Programme, another Rs 2.40 crore would be from National Food Security Mission with the National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology (Sub mission on Seed and Planting Material) providing another Rs 4.32 crore.
The state government’s share would be Rs 25.34 crore and for ploughing work the government would divert Rs 3 crore from NADP to the chief engineer, agricultural engineering, it added.
