Amidst much anticipation, the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) results on Friday. After getting exemption from taking the test last year, this is the first time that students from Tamil Nadu wrote the mandatory test for both the state and all India quota.

However, none of the students from Tamil Nadu made it to the top 250, in the list released by CBSE. Navdeep Singh from Punjab secured the first rank by scoring 99 per cent, while Archit Gupta and Manish Mulchandani secured the second and the third ranks, respectively, scoring 695 marks each.

At the all India level as many as  9.13 lakh students had taken the exam in English while the rest had taken the exam either in Hindi or other eight regional languages. Of the 11.38 lakh candidates who had registered, as many as 10.90 lakh appeared for the test. Over 6.11 lakh students have qualified. Those who have scored 40 per cent and above are eligible for attending counselling. “Though the official data for the state-wise performance is yet to be released, Tamil Nadu’s performance vis-à-vis other states is comparatively less, as they were at a disadvantage. The students here were just not prepared for the exam because of the confusion over whether they would be exempted from writing it,” says educationist S Somasundaram, “Moreover, most of the schools failed to concentrate on the Class 11 portions. The NEET paper requires knowledge of the concept that is part of Class 11 curriculum. They had neither the time nor the facility to prepare for this national test,” he adds.

The seats will be filled in All India quota, State Government quota, State/Management/NRI quota in private institutions, including Deemed Colleges and Central pool quota Seats. The details and schedule of counselling would be announced later by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education Directorates of States. Now that the NEET results are out, the TNEA counselling dates are expected to be announced soon.

Kovai boy ranked 260, Chennai lad 351

Though there are no students from the state in the top 250, the top rank holder from Tamil Nadu is Mukesh Kanna GM with an all-India ranking of 260, having scored 655/720. Adhithya Pranav is the second rank holder from the state, followed by Aiswarya Srinivasan, who has secured the 391 rank, with 646 marks.  TR Jeeva is ranked 404, after securing 645/720. Chennai boy K Adhithya Pranav and a student of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School in Adyar has scored 648/720,  securing an all-India rank of 351.

Speaking to DTNext , Coimbatore boy Mahesh said,  “I passed out of  Class 12 in 2015 and joined PSG College of Engineering in Coimbatore. Last year, I heard that the NEET examination is compulsory and I decided to take the test. I dropped out of engineering and prepared for eight months on my own for NEET. I am very pleased with my results.”  Adhithya is touted to be the only student from the state who passed all the three important medical tests, including JIPMER, AIIMS and NEET. “I got an all-India 87 rank in JIPMER and 262 rank in AIIMS and 351 rank in NEET. I am going for the JIPMER counselling and I am eligible for finding seats in any AIIMS apart from Delhi,” says Adhithya, who scored 95 per cent in Class 12 CBSE exam.

Timeline:

  • The NEET initiated in 2013 to end multiple entrance examinations for admissions to undergraduate medical courses, was conducted on May 7 this year and the result was to be declared on June 8
  • The HC Bench at Madurai stayed the declaration of the NEET 2017 results, till June 7, responding to a written petition by a group of students from Madurai, who alleged that the question banks in English, Hindi and eight other vernacular languages were simpler in some states as compared to others. The students sought a re-examination
  • The CBSE, the official exam organiser, clarified that the decision to set papers in different languages was to avoid conducting the entire exam again, in case of question paper leak
  • While the SC initially refrained from taking up an appeal by the CBSE, it later agreed when Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh sought an urgent hearing
  • Accepting the ASG’s submission that the delay in declaring the results would affect the future of lakhs of students, the SC on June 12 vacated the HC stay and barred all high courts from entertaining any petition on NEET 2017 results
  • It permitted, the CBSE - the official exam organiser - to declare the results before June 26
  • However, on June 20, a notice appeared on CBSE’s website stating that the results would be declared on that day. But, within a few hours, the notice was withdrawn
  • The much-awaited results were finally declared on June 23
