It is said, the deceased farmer as A Ganesan (40) hailed from Adavathur panchayat near Somarasampettai had four acres of fertile land near Koyyathoppu village. It is said, since, a well in his farm went dry, he reportedly dug a new open well by pooling in money from family and friends.
However, the new well too failed to yield adequate water. A dejected Ganesan on Sunday, immolated himself. He was admitted to the Tiruchy GH with severe burn injuries and died on Monday.
Since he was the sole bread winner of the family, his wife Seethalakshmi (35) along with her children and in-laws accompanied by Puliyur Nagarajan state president of Tamil Maanila Congress sought the district administration for a compensation of Rs 30 lakhs. “Many of the farmers are frustrated with their borewells and open wells failing to support the irrigation needs. State government understanding the severity of the condition should sanction special funds for establishing bore wells at least to save the standing crops,” Puliyur Nagarajan said.
Meanwhile, Puliyur Nagarajan claimed that the Somarasampettai police refused to file FIR stating that he had committed suicide owing to crop loss. But they, reportedly registered a case of self immolation under influence of alcohol which may prevent while claiming for compensation, Nagarajan added.
The victim’s family has also sought the district administration for proper filing of FIR and to consider providing a government job to the widow on compassionate grounds. Officials who received the petition assured of a proper solution.
