Autorickshaw driver hacked to death in Salem

An autorickshaw driver was hacked to death by an unidentified gang while he was riding his bike close to the burial ground at Maniyanur in Salem city on Friday morning.

The victim Govindaraj (29), of Kondalampatti in the city also ran a grocery outlet and indulged in kangaroo courts. 

Salem city police, who formed special teams and were on the lookout for the accused, said they would be able to come to a conclusion on the modus operandi of the crime only after identifying the accused. Inquiry revealed that he had married two women. Through his first wife Saranyadevi, he had two children.

It is learnt that he had recently married a minor girl who is now pregnant. According to the police, inquiry revealed that on Friday morning Govindaraj had taken Saranyadevi to a hospital as she had fallen ill. He had dropped her home around 10 am and left on his bike. In a short while, he was found dead on a mud road close to the burial ground.

He had suffered deep cuts on his forehead, neck and chest. Police said he was hacked to death while he was riding his bike. CCTV footage was retrieved from nearby localities in a bid to identify the accused.
