When asked, what makes the ‘Wall of Kindness’ unique and different, Nanduri said “see it for yourself and it has a host of used items donated by the people to be used by those who don’t have them or are in need of it.” The wall has cupboards, shelves, trolley, all made of wood, and hooks to hang clothes on and has been set up just outside the Collectorate.
The first donor was the Collector himself who inaugurated it by placing a few books on the racks, besides a bunch of clothes. “The idea originated from similar initiatives at present running in Bengaluru and a few other cities in Andhra Pradesh.
But, in Tamil Nadu, it is probably the first time,” says the Collector with a big smile. As per the scheme, people can place used items like books, clothes, toys and any other article of their choice.
Those who are in need of such items can pick them up. By this way, people disposing old goods can put it to good use which will help the needy. There will be no security as it will defeat the whole idea, the Collector notes.
Based on the response from th e public, both donors and beneficiaries, the scheme would be extended to other public places like bus stand and railway stations, he added. On day one, several persons actively came forward to donate (place) used items on the wall. Even some of the cops were seen placing old clothes in the shelves.
