With the inauguration of the new road to Dhanushkodi, there has been a steady stream of tourists to the town. But with surge in crowds, visitors to the town have urged authorities to improve a host of facilities in the neighbourhood.
Most of them rue about lack of proper parking facilities.
“After the Prime Minister inaugurated the 9.5 km road, weekends see more than 900 vehicles in the stretch. But as there is no parking facility, vehicles are seen parked on the roadside,” say police personnel.
The problem was felt more in the last ten days.
“The town has none of the facilities that a tourist destination should have. It lacks basic facilities such as toilet and drinking water. Sans proper security, visitors are afraid of looking around beyond 5 pm.
There is no proper shade too for people to take rest. Tourists, therefore, demand the officials and government to make arrangements to improve tourism in the town.
Balaraman, a tourist from Madurai, said that they are forced to park the vehicles on the road. It is an arduous task to take out the vehicles from where they have been parked.
“We will be able find a slot in the parking lot only if we reach the town early in the morning.
Also, it takes 30 minutes to reverse the vehicle from where we have parked, and reach the main road,” he explained.
A similar problem exists for government buses too. It is difficult for them to take a U turn to reach the road. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an exclusive parking lot in Dhanushkodi, pointed out Balaraman.
Another tourist, Devi from Chennai, said that tourists are neither provided benches nor shades to relax in the afternoon.
Bereft of all these facilities, the hot weather turns the trip unpleasant.
Ramanathapuram Collector, S Natarajan, said that government has chalked out a detailed plan to create basic facilities in the island.
