The State has about 3.2 lakh weavers involved in this trade and nearly 1.29 lakh families depend on textile and handloom sectors. “The government has been implementing projects set forth by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for the benefit of weavers,” Palaniswami said.
Enlisting the slew of welfare measures extended by the State, Palaniswami observed that the exchequer bears rebate of 30 per cent discount extended for handloom and textiles for 139 days between September 15 and January 31 every year in honour of former CM CN Annadurai’s birthday.
On Aug 7, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the first National Handloom Day in Tamil Nadu in the presence of Jayalalithaa and former Governor K Rosaiah.
A week-long exhibition-cum-sale of handloom and textiles has been organised at Kalaivanar Arangam as part of National Handloom Day celebrations in the city.
