The accused, T Kumar, was caught red handed while receiving Rs 20,000 commission from Balaji from Velapadi in Vellore district, who was a labour contractor to Vellore Corporation for its ongoing anti-dengue drive.
In his written complaint to DVAC, Balaji had stated that Rs 10,90,200 was due from Vellore Corporation for providing manpower for three months from May to July and when he met Corporation Commissioner Kumar on August 3, the latter reportedly demanded two per cent commission (Rs 22,000) in order to get his due settled.
In the preliminary investigation, DVAC officials confirmed that Kumar asked a cut from Balaji and laid a trap to nab him. On Thursday, DVAC sleuths asked Balaji to give Rs 20,000 to Kumar
at his office and arrested the latter when he accepted the cash. In a raid in the office premises that followed, cops found Rs 1 lakh and four thousand in cash and seized it as he didn’t have valid documents. Kumar’s house was also raided and cash worth Rs 9,40,000 and 26 sovereigns of gold jewels were also seized. Kumar was produced before the magistrate and remanded in 15-day judicial custody. Police investigation is on.
