No I-Day celebrations in Kandani as villagers mourn martyr

A pall of gloom decended on Kandani village near Illayankudi in Sivaganga district on Sunday, when it received the death news of army jawan Ilayaraja of their village, who had died while fighting bravely against the terrorists in a gun battle at Jammu and Kashmir.

They were informed that the 26-year-old was shot dead at Shopian’s Awneera village in north Kashmir.

In the incident, two soldiers, Ilayaraja and Gawai Sumedh Waman from Akola in Maharashtra, were killed in an anti-militancy operation that began on Saturday evening at Shopian’s Awneera village, 70 km from Srinagar. A joint team of police, army and CRPF confronted the with militants after intelligence reports revealed details about a meeting held by noted terrorist leaders inside a local mosque.

Ilayaraja’s widow Selvi is four months pregnant. Villagers said that his baby would be the child of the entire village as Ilayaraja had made their village proud by giving up his life for the country. The marytr was born to daily wage earners Periyasamy and Meenakshi. He had joined the army in 2013 and had gotten married some months ago.
