Courtallam is one of the most favoured tourist destinations in the southern districts, as people from across the state come to experience the thrill of taking bath at the waterfalls. Also, the water, which has a natural mix of herbs, as it passes through the Western Ghats without any human interaction, reaches Courtallam first. So, the falls are called the ‘Spa of South India’ for its natural healing properties.

The season at Courtallam roughly commences towards the mid of June along with the south west monsoon and ends in mid-September along with the end of the monsoon. This year, as the first two months of south west monsoon were dry, the season did not kick off as expected.

On some days, the water flow was very lean and the people had to stand in long queues to access the minimal flow. Despite the unexciting season, tourists continued to pour in during weekends and extended holidays.

However, in mid-August, towards the end of the season, the Western Ghats received torrential rain because of which there was excess water flow in the falls. It even led to a bathing ban on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday morning, the intensity of the flow reduced and the ban on bathing was lifted.

The weekend turned out to be a perfect treat for the tourists at the falls, as the water flow was quite right for an enjoyable bath.  All the waterfalls in Courtallam, including the Main Falls, Five Falls, old Courtallam and Tiger falls witnessed heavy rush on Saturday and the crowd continued to swell.
